The date was selected to honor the date Lou became the Yankees' starting first baseman, thus cementing the start of his incredible streak of 2,130 consecutive games played. Home renovations often become necessary following a Lou Gehrig's disease diagnosis. Last year, the Live Like Lou Foundation awarded $50,000 in home improvement grants. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and friends, these funds are made possible! Staying in one's home after being diagnosed with ALS requires making adaptions for safety, ease, and creating normalcy. Kathrine, from Baltimore, was diagnosed with ALS in 2021 and can no longer use the stairs that get in and out of her home located on a hill. With the grant funding, she installed two metal ramps that allow her to get to appointments and interact with her community. Three of our 2023 grant recipients have completed their funded projects and have shared updates. Last week at the second annual All 4 Lou Showdown at First Horizon Park, the McCormick family was recognized leading up to the game. Gerald McCormick, a US Army veteran who served in the Gulf War, read somewhere that veterans are more likely to have ALS. But like most people, he figured that would never happen to him and wouldn't impact him and his family. Until it did. In early 2021, he developed a limp in his right leg. After many months of doctor visits and arduous testing, it was finally confirmed to be ALS. Gerald, a former state legislator, lives in Nashville. He and his wife Kim have two daughters and a granddaughter, Margot, who also attended the Vandy Boys game. Margot threw out the first pitch to the Nashville Sounds Baseball Club mascot, Booster! Gerald has been an active voice in ALS advocacy, and we are honored to have his family involved with the Live Like Lou Foundation. #livelikelou #als #alsawareness #baseball

Live Like Lou's 2024 Postdoctoral Fellowship applications are due April 12, 2024. This grant will fund an emerging scientist interested in ALS in the early stages of postdoctoral training at an R1-level institutional research laboratory (or equivalent) up to $75,000 annually for up to two years.
